Tell us a little about Haven Currumbin. What can we expect when we unlock the door?
We want our guests to feel like they have checked into a small boutique hotel. From the furnishings, linen, towels, toiletries (including Grown Alchemist and Aēsop) to the fully stocked kitchen, we’ve carefully thought about the finer details. We also leave all of our guests a beautiful bottle of wine, local Panya Sourdough, locally sourced milk, Byron Bay Organic French Press coffee, Brookfarm Muesli, Byron Bay Cookies, and organic tea… we don’t want you to have to think about anything! Aside from the kitchen, we have Netflix, boardgames and the best selection of coffee table books (in the unlikely event it rains!) or for those moments you just want to kick back at home and relax.
Why did you name it Haven?
It’s a funny story actually – I was showing our renovation to our real estate agent and friend, Mishy Canning, and her daughter, Haven. At the time I hadn’t decided on a name and I mentioned to Mishy how I couldn’t come up with anything. She happened to say ‘what about ‘Haven’?!’. It was actually perfect, and describes how I feel every time I walk through the door — a place to retreat – so we went with it and love it!
Tell us a bit about the style/feel of Haven? Can we expect to see any pieces from any local makers, stores or artisans?
I’d like to say Haven is a mix of styles – scandi, coastal, modern, simple – mostly I hope that it’s a space that everyone feels comfortable and relaxed in. I tried to source as many things as I could from local stores and artisans as I believe it’s really important to support local small business. Haven has pieces curated from The Borrowed Nursery, Prae Store, Kind Curations, and Gather to name a few. We also picked some pieces from our favourite Byron Bay stores, too!
Currumbin is such a beautiful seaside town. Any recommendations on how we should spend our time here?
My ideal day at Haven would be something along the lines of… an early wake up, a stroll down to the beach for a swim, wander about to either Stable Coffee Kitchen (pictured) or The Salt Mill for coffee and breakfast. If the weather is fine, I would spend a few hours at Currumbin Alley or the creek, some lunch at Niche and Co. in Tugun, followed by an afternoon of rest and relaxation.
And top it off with a glass of wine, maybe a cheese plate on the balcony followed by a delicious dinner at one of our favourite local spots. Sunday’s would be spent cruising all of the amazing markets around! If I had kids I would definitely head to the Currumbin Sanctuary for the day – just across the road from Haven!
We’ve only got 24 hours to spend here, any absolute must-do’s?
If I only had 24 hours I would park the car and not leave Currumbin – there’s so much to do and see all within walking distance. I’m not a fan of squeezing in lots of stuff, I’m more about enjoying whats right in front of me – 24 hours isn’t long enough to explore this town! My main focus would be coffee, eating and relaxing!
Your go-to local coffee spots?
Coffee is one of my favourite topics, I pride myself on hunting out the best and Currumbin is not short of options! My go-to’s include Stable Coffee Kitchen, The Salt Mill, Good Day Coffee and The Dust Temple. A special mention also to Currumbin Farmers Market, on Thursday, that can cover coffee, brekky and all of the best local produce!
We’ve decided to head north of Currumbin, any tips?
Upon arrival, our guests receive a locals guides we put together. We want all of our guest to come and appreciate how amazing our area is and support our favourite local spots! We list all of our favourites north and south. For eating/drinking/coffee, down south, I love The Bread Social, Francies Pizza and Tasca to name a few and it’s always hard to go past a surf at Snapper Rocks or a day on the beach at Greenmount. North – oh so many to choose from, Balboa, The Collective, Mr Buttergoods, Canteen, Jimmy Wahs, Mr Hizolas, Iku, Labart…
My favourite things to do would be to spend the day at Tallebudgera Creek, watch the sunset from Burleigh Hill – or The Burleigh Farmers on a Saturday morning or The Village Markets on a Sunday. Every day is covered!
Any secret spots only the locals would know about?
I think a lot of people come to Currumbin (or around this area) and don’t realise just how much it has to offer – the food and coffee scene, boutique shopping and there’s so many creative artists around. I’d say the locals have kept a lot of secrets – I’m originally from Byron and every time I visit I find something new that I didn’t know about! That’s why we have put so much effort into our guide – we share all of the secrets!
